Every once in a while… Life shows you something that you had not considered and it changes you. I learned about the FTM community through my work as a surgeon. I was shocked at how poorly patients were treated and how much hate people had to deal with—especially when their physical, emotional and spiritual selves were significantly stressed. I felt there was something important I could do with my skills to help this underserved population achieve what they want in life. I got involved, started learning and haven’t stopped since. I enjoy giving lectures and doing research to help make the quality of life better throughout this community. – Dr. Burt Webb

FTM Hysterectomy

Dr. Webb offers multiple methods of Hysterectomy: Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (TLH), Laparoscopically-Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH) and Abdominal Hysterectomy.

Dr. Webb prefers to perform Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy, including removal of ovaries and Fallopian tubes. (If possible, Dr. Webb also tries to remove the upper part of the vagina as this makes a future Vaginectomy easier to perform.) However, this is a personal decision, based on patient needs, future fertility, hormone replacement, as well as any current conditions that may be aided or exacerbated by ovarian removal, such as endometriosis.

Note: Only a trained and experienced laparoscopic surgeon should perform TLH. It is a newer and technically more difficult surgery to perform, but it has many advantages to the patient, such as shorter operating time, smaller scars and a faster recovery.

FTM Vaginectomy

In Dr. Webb’s experienced hands, Vaginectomy is a safe and effective surgery. The procedure includes the removal of the vaginal lining, also known as the mucosa, fusion of the vaginal walls, and closure of the vaginal opening. Vaginectomy can be performed as a standalone procedure or in combination with other procedures, such as Hysterectomy. Dr. Webb learned how to perform Vaginectomy from the world-famous Dr. Desmond Johnson, and in the years since has worked to perfect his technique to minimize bleeding and the risks of injury to both the bladder and the rectum. Furthermore, Dr. Webb’s technique allows for faster healing, recovery and less post-operative pain.

Note: In Dr. Meltzer’s practice, Vaginectomy is required for all patients having urethral lengthening, as it has been shown to dramatically lower the risk of fistulas in the lengthened urethra.

Surgery Facility
Dr. Webb performs FTM surgeries primarily at Greenbaum Surgical Center in Scottsdale and is affiliated with HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center. OR staff are well-versed in transgender care, and patients, their loved ones and families are treated with respect and compassion.
