Dr. Dev Gurujal, MD is a board-certified Plastic Surgeon in San Francisco who is dedicated to applying his surgical skills and background in engineering to the advancement of gender surgery techniques. He works exclusively with trans women, trans men and non-binary patients seeking gender-affirming surgeries, including Phalloplasty, Vaginoplasty and Facial Feminization. Dr. Gurujal joined Align Surgical Associates in 2019, after five years of performing gender surgery, microsurgery, and general reconstructive and aesthetic surgery in the Kaiser Permanente healthcare network.
Dr. Gurujal is a Diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree (Neurobiology with Minor in Cognitive Science with Honors) and Medical Degree at Northwestern University in Illinois. He also completed his Plastic Surgery residency at Northwestern, and concurrently obtained a Master of Science, Engineering Design and Innovation. Additionally, Dr. Gurujal has fellowship training in microsurgery from Stanford University and served as a Research Fellow at Northwestern’s Laboratory for Wound Repair and Regenerative Medicine, where he conducted four years of research into wound healing, bacterial biofilms, and the reduction of scar formation, providing a strong foundation for his work as a Gender Surgeon.
Dr. Gurujal is a co-author of numerous academic journal articles in the areas of plastic surgery, wound healing and gender surgery. Dr. Gurujal is also an inventor, holding patents in the development of a new type of suture used in reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Gurujal is a member of the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH), and a presenter at transgender conferences such as Gender Odyssey.

Facilities
Dr. Gurujal is associated with Marin General Hospital. Surgeries take place at Post Street Surgery Center in San Francisco, as well as California Pacific Medical Center and St. Francis. Dr. Gurujal’s Vaginoplasty patients stay at the surgery center for 24 hrs, then go to a rehabilitation facility for 48 hrs, followed by a stay at a local hotel with hired nurses.
Surgery Requirements
Requirements vary by procedure. For genital surgery, patients are required to supply one or two (depending on procedure) letters of support from mental health therapists, and a letter from your primary care physician or endocrinologist; must have been living in your desired gender for at least a year; must have been taking hormones for a year; and must demonstrate that they have adequate support from family and their work community. A mammogram is required for Top Surgery patients who are 50 years and older. Dr. Gurujal will operate on minors with parental consent.
